Will Oregon Remain a Sanctuary State When Trump Promises To ‘End All Sanctuary Cities’?

Source: Trump campaign

Oregon is a sanctuary state in which law enforcement officers cannot ask about the residency status of people arrested for any type of crime including drug dealing and sex trafficking. This may change in 2025 if former President Donald Trump is reelected to a second term.

At a campaign rally today in Wilmington, North Carolina, Trump stated, “Today, I am announcing a new plan to end ALL Sanctuary Cities in North Carolina and across the country. As soon as I take office, we will immediately surge federal law enforcement to every city that is failing to turn over criminal aliens.”

In the 1970’s, President Richard Nixon got states to reduce speed limits to 55 MPH by threatening to withhold federal highway funds from states who maintained higher speed limits during a fuel crisis. Trump could do something similar by withholding federal law enforcement support to states, counties and cities who maintain sanctuary status.

Oregon’s ‘Sanctuary Promise’ forbids state and local law enforcement from co-operating with federal immigration officers. Violators can be sued by ‘anyone.’ Learn more at the state website.
